Tanko Bushi
(Coal MinerΉs Dance)
History:  This is a Japanese Folk-Dance, which tells a story about the coal miners in Japan.  This danced is performed at summer festivals called Ubons.  The actions of the dance represent the digging for coal, shoveling it into a cart, shading the eyes from the sun, and pushing the coal cart away up a hill.

Personal Side Story: These dances are done out of honor for the ancestors that have passed on before you. They are not to be done in fun otherwise you are dishonoring the family line. I learned this dance for my great-grandmother’s 90th birthday party (she lived to be 102). We danced to honor her and her life so far. At the festivals, you dance for all those who have passed on before. So no goofing around!

Formation:
Circle of Dancers and/or circles within circles.  Face counterclockwise

Lines can be used to teach the parts.
Music:  Tanko Bushi  (Human Kinetics, Multicultural Folk Dance)

Directions:
Part 1:  Dig

(4 counts) Tap the ball of your right foot, then step onto the right foot while pretending to dig twice to the right with a big shovel. (Dig)

ALUNELUL (al-loo-nay-loo)

County of origin: Romania

Alunelul means "little hazelnut"

Formation: circles of 8-10 people

Stamps do not have a weight change in this dance. For styling, step behind onto the ball of the foot, versus the whole or flat foot. This dance uses whole and half counts of music, which makes it very lively.

Part I: Double Grapevine with Double Stamp X 2

Traveling toward the right, step right foot, step on the left foot behind the right foot, step on the right foot, step on the left foot behind the right foot again, step on the right foot and stamp twice with left foot. Repeat to your left.

Part II: Single Grapevine with Single Stamp X 2

Traveling toward the right, step on the right foot, step on the left foot behind the right foot, step on the right foot and stamp once with the left foot. Repeat to your left.

Part III: Alternating Side Steps and Stamp with the Double Stamp

Traveling toward the right, step on the right foot and stamp the left heel, traveling the left, step on the left heel and stamp with the right heel. Then step on the right foot and double stamp with the left heel. Repeat to the left side. And repeat dance to the end of the music.
